Why Your Ads Are Failing and How to Fix It

31/08/2023 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas

Let’s cut to the chase: the advertising world is booming, but not necessarily for us here in the UK.

Global ad spend is skyrocketing, set to hit $1 trillion soon. But guess what? The UK’s share of that pie isn’t growing as fast.

So, what’s a small business owner to do? Simple: Get smart with your advertising.

Why Your Ads Aren’t Working

You’ve probably tried it all—Facebook ads, Google ads, even those short-lived TikTok campaigns.

But if you’re reading this, chances are they haven’t worked as well as you’d hoped. The problem isn’t you; it’s where and how you’re advertising.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Platform

As a photographer, filmmaker, and content marketing coach, I can’t stress this enough: not all platforms are created equal.

Research shows that high-attention platforms can boost the impact of strong creative campaigns by up to 75%.

So, ditch those low-attention platforms and focus on where your audience actually spends quality time.

Tip 2: Quality Over Quantity

You don’t need a Hollywood budget to create compelling ads. What you need is a clear message and quality visuals.

A well-shot photo or a short, engaging video can do wonders.

Remember, in advertising, less is often more.

Tip 3: Be Authentic

People can spot a fake from a mile away, especially in advertising.

Use your own voice, your own style, and your own message.

Authenticity resonates with people and makes your brand memorable.

Tip 4: Track and Tweak

Don’t just set and forget your ads. Keep an eye on how they’re performing.

Are people clicking through? Are they engaging with your content? Use this data to tweak your campaigns for better results.

Tip 5: Diversify, But Don’t Dilute

It’s tempting to throw a little money at every new advertising fad that comes along. Resist the urge.

Stick to a few high-attention platforms and focus your efforts there.

Spreading yourself too thin can dilute your message and your impact.

The Bottom Line

The big tech firms are already taking over half of the global advertising spend. But that doesn’t mean you can’t carve out your own successful path.

The key is to be smart about where and how you advertise.

So, here’s my call to action for you: Take a hard look at your current advertising strategy. Is it smart? Is it effective? If not, it’s time for a change.

Start with one of the tips above and implement it this week. Trust me, your bottom line will thank you.
