When you’re looking for a photographer, it’s easy to get caught up in the images.
Of course, the photos matter. You want someone whose work speaks to you and reflects the look you’re after.
But there’s something else that’s just as important — the person behind the camera.
Choosing the right photographer isn’t only about the pictures they produce. It’s about finding someone who understands you, listens to what you need, and brings something extra to the table.
Photography is personal. Whether it’s for a portrait, a business shoot, or an event, you’re inviting someone into your world. That’s why working with a photographer who is not just skilled, but well-rounded and grounded in real life, can make all the difference.
Before I became a professional photographer, I spent many years working as a Chartered Financial Planner. It’s quite a shift, you might think, from numbers and spreadsheets to cameras and portraits. But there’s a surprising amount of overlap.
That first career taught me how to listen carefully, build trust, and focus on what people truly value. It wasn’t about selling a product; it was about understanding someone’s story and helping them shape their future. That same principle guides my work today.
Photography, after all, is about capturing moments that matter — and doing so with care and intention.
Outside of work, I also play an active role in the Cranleigh community.
I’m the Chairman of Knowle Park Trust, a charity that manages a beautiful country park and nature reserve in the village. It’s a place for people and wildlife, and I’m passionate about making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
I also serve as the Event Director of Cranleigh parkrun, a free weekly timed run that brings people together, rain or shine, for a friendly and active start to the weekend.
These roles aren’t just hobbies. They’re a big part of who I am. They reflect values that shape how I work as a photographer: community, reliability, and a real interest in people.
When you hire me, you’re not just getting someone to click a shutter. You’re working with someone who shows up, gets involved, and takes pride in doing a good job.
So, how do you choose the right photographer for you?
Start by thinking beyond the portfolio. Yes, have a look at their work. Make sure the style matches your vision.
But also ask: do they get what I’m about? Are they easy to talk to? Do they take the time to understand what I need?
Photography sessions aren’t always straightforward. Things change, people run late, the weather turns. A photographer who’s calm, adaptable and organised can take all that in their stride.
My background in financial planning taught me how to manage moving parts without stress. And my voluntary work has taught me how to work with all kinds of people, in all sorts of situations.
If you’re a small business owner, a charity, or a solopreneur, you probably wear many hats yourself. You want a photographer who understands that.
Someone who’s been in your shoes and knows that you need photos that work hard — not just look good. That might mean brand portraits that feel natural and authentic, or event photography that tells the story of what your organisation is about.
When I work with clients, I aim to bring all of this together. The technical skills, of course. But also the people skills, the planning skills, and the community spirit.
I want the whole experience to feel smooth, straightforward, and — dare I say — enjoyable.
Choosing the right photographer is about trust. You’re trusting someone to capture how you want to be seen. It helps to know that person is not only a capable professional, but someone with a broader perspective.
Someone who’s engaged with the world around them and who brings that richness into their work.
So if you’re looking for a photographer who brings experience, professionalism, and a real-world approach to every project, I’d love to hear from you.
