Feel Confident in Front of the Camera

30/05/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Most of us feel a little awkward when a camera is pointed our way.

Suddenly, we don’t know what to do with our hands, how to smile, or where to look. Even the most confident person can feel unsure in front of the lens.

But here’s the good news: feeling comfortable and looking natural in photos isn’t about being naturally photogenic. It’s something you can learn, and it starts with a few simple steps.

Whether you’re booking a portrait session, updating your brand photos, or stepping in front of the camera for the first time in years, this post will help you feel more at ease and look your best.

Get to Know Your Photographer

The first and most important step is to find a photographer you feel comfortable with.

A good photographer won’t just press the shutter and hope for the best. They’ll guide you, chat with you, and help you relax.

If you’re local to Cranleigh or the Surrey Hills, meeting for a coffee or a short call before the session can help break the ice.

When you feel like you’re talking to a person rather than posing for a camera, the results are always better.

Wear Clothes That Feel Like You

One of the biggest causes of discomfort in front of the camera is wearing something that doesn’t feel right. Maybe it’s too tight, too formal, or just not your style.

Choose clothes that you feel good in, and that reflect who you are. If you feel relaxed and confident in what you’re wearing, it will show in the pictures.

That said, it’s worth avoiding very busy patterns or anything too shiny, as these can distract from your face.

Don’t Worry About Posing

You don’t need to know how to pose. It’s your photographer’s job to guide you.

A skilled photographer will give gentle direction to help you look your best.

You might be asked to shift your weight, turn slightly to the side, or drop your shoulders. These small adjustments make a big difference and will help you look more natural and relaxed.

Rather than trying to remember poses or copy what you’ve seen online, focus on small movements. A little shift of the head, a genuine smile, or a relaxed laugh often creates the most striking images.

The more you move naturally and respond to the moment, the better your photos will look.

Practice Makes a Difference

It may sound silly, but spending a few minutes in front of the mirror can help.

Smile, stand tall, and get used to how your face and body look from different angles.

You don’t need to strike a pose like a model. Just practise being present and aware of your expression. You could even take a few selfies, not for the sake of posting them, but to see how different lighting and angles affect how you look.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s about becoming more familiar with your own face and how it changes with different expressions.

Trust the Process

When you book a professional photography session, you’re not expected to know what you’re doing. That’s the whole point.

A good session is relaxed and enjoyable. It’s about capturing something real and true to you, whether that’s a moment of laughter, a thoughtful look, or a smile that slowly grows as the camera clicks.

It’s also worth remembering that you don’t have to love every single image.

Part of the process is finding the ones where everything comes together: the light, the expression, the timing. One truly great photo can say more than a dozen average ones.

Focus on Why You’re Doing It

Before your shoot, think about why you want these photos.

Maybe it’s to update your website, celebrate a personal milestone, or mark a new chapter in your business. Keeping this in mind can help you stay grounded and focused during the session.

Instead of worrying about how you look, you’ll be thinking about the story you’re telling.

When your photos have purpose, they carry more weight and meaning. That confidence will come through in your expressions and body language.

You’re Not Alone

Almost everyone feels unsure before a photo session. It’s completely normal.

The key is to show up, be yourself, and trust your photographer to guide you. The camera isn’t there to judge you. It’s there to capture you as you are.

Over time, as you see the results and get more comfortable, you’ll realise you don’t need to be someone else in front of the lens. You just need to be yourself.

If you’re in Cranleigh, the Surrey Hills, or nearby and you’re thinking about booking a session but feeling nervous, I’d love to help you feel more at ease.

Let’s have a chat first, with no pressure, and take it from there. Get in touch today to start the conversation.

  • I’d stumbled across Martin somehow on instagram, I was immediately struck by some of his portraits of a female actor. I loved the way he had used the light in her portraits which created mood and drama.

Martin is an exceptional photographer and a really lovely person. He puts you immediately at ease and his calm nature and positive outlook immediately help you to relax in front of the camera. He had really listened to the brief I had given and provided advice on compositions to capture the look I really wanted.

The images have come out even better than I would have imagined and you can really observe how relaxed he made me feel in every shot. The photography is both a keepsake and something I can share to promote my business, I can’t thank him enough.
