How to Find Photoshoot Ideas and Share Them with Your Photographer

03/01/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Planning a photoshoot is an exciting opportunity to express your style, personality, or brand. But where do you start when it comes to finding inspiration?

Whether it’s your first or tenth session, having clear ideas can make a difference. Sharing these ideas with your photographer ensures everyone is on the same page, setting the stage for a successful and enjoyable photoshoot.

At the heart of this process lies collaboration. Your input is invaluable, but so is the expertise of your photographer. Together, you can create something truly special.

Here’s how to find photoshoot ideas, share them effectively, and strike the perfect balance between collaboration and trust.

Why Collaboration Matters

A photoshoot is a two-way street. You bring your vision, personality, or brand identity, while your photographer provides the technical know-how and creative flair to bring it to life.

By sharing your ideas and working together, you can ensure the final images reflect your goals while showcasing the photographer’s unique style.

The best results come when clients and photographers are open to each other’s input. It’s about teamwork – blending your inspiration with the photographer’s expertise.

1 – Start with Your Goals

Before diving into ideas, think about what you want from the shoot. Are you looking for professional headshots, family portraits, or creative branding images? You may want to capture a milestone event, such as a birthday or anniversary.

Clearly defining your goals helps shape the direction of the photoshoot. It also gives your photographer a solid starting point for understanding your vision.

2 – Gather Inspiration

Finding inspiration is easier than ever with countless resources at your fingertips. Here are some ideas:

Pinterest: Create a private board to collect images that resonate with you. Think about poses, locations, outfits, and colour schemes. Pinterest is a treasure trove of visual inspiration, and sharing a board with your photographer makes collaboration seamless.

Instagram: Save posts from photographers, influencers, or brands whose style you admire.

Magazines and Blogs: Old-school print media is still a fantastic source of creative ideas.

Your Own Life: Consider your hobbies, interests, and meaningful locations – these personal touches can make your shoot unique.

3 – Share Your Vision with Your Photographer

Once you’ve collected your ideas, share them in a way that’s clear and easy to understand. I particularly love using private Pinterest boards for this purpose. They allow you to collate and organise inspiration in one place, making discussing specifics with your photographer simple.

When sharing, think about these points:

Mood and Style: Are you going for something bright and airy, dramatic and moody, or playful and quirky?

Colours and Themes: Highlight specific tones or themes that catch your eye.

Specific Elements: Mention any poses, props, or backdrops you’d like to incorporate.

4 – Stay Open to Your Photographer’s Suggestions

While it’s great to have ideas, remember that your photographer has experience and a trained eye. They might suggest tweaks to your vision to make it more achievable or enhance the final results.

For example, certain poses might look great in a magazine but feel stiff or awkward in real life.

Trusting your photographer to guide you is essential for a smooth and enjoyable shoot. Be open to their suggestions, and don’t hesitate to ask questions if something feels unclear.

5 – Keep the Focus on You

It’s easy to get caught up in replicating photos you’ve seen online, but the best shoots are the ones that feel personal and authentic.

Use your inspiration as a jumping-off point rather than a strict template. Discuss how to tailor the ideas to reflect your unique personality, story, or brand.

6 – Plan Ahead

Once you and your photographer have a shared vision, plan the details together. Discuss:

-Locations and lighting options.

-Outfit choices and accessories.

-Props or items that fit the theme.

-Timing to capture the best light (especially for outdoor shoots).

Good planning minimises stress and lets you focus on enjoying the experience.

Why Sharing Ideas Builds Trust

Sharing your ideas shows your photographer that you’re invested in the process. It helps them understand your vision and ensures the shoot feels like a true collaboration.

At the same time, trusting their expertise gives them the freedom to work creatively and deliver their best work.

When both parties feel heard and valued, the photoshoot becomes a fun and rewarding experience – and the results speak for themselves.

I believe collaboration is the key to creating stunning images.

  • Todays shoot with Martin was an absolutely lovely way to spend an afternoon! From start to finish it was super fun and creative and we hopefully produced some really cool shots. Pre shoot comms were great and Martin sent some ideas of what he wanted to capture. During the shoot we bounced ideas around and tried other shots which was really good fun. Martin has already sent over the proofs a few hours later and already there are so many amazing images to choose from! I couldn’t recommend Martin highly enough.
