How to Have More Fun During a Photoshoot (and Why It Matters)

30/12/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Not everyone feels like a natural in front of the camera. In fact, most people I work with aren’t exactly huge fans of having their photos taken – at least not at the start of their session.

For many, a photoshoot can be an awkward, nerve-wracking, or even downright intimidating experience. It’s one of the reasons why I wrote my book, The Confident Portrait.

But here’s a secret for you: the more fun you have during a photoshoot, the better the photos will turn out.

Joy is contagious. Having fun while having your photos taken translates beautifully into better images.

Whether you’re planning a portrait session, an event shoot, or brand photography, creating a fun atmosphere can be the secret to capturing authentic, stunning photos that you’ll love.

Here are some simple, practical tips to ensure your next photoshoot is a fun and memorable experience.

1 – Choose the Right Photographer

The foundation of any great photoshoot is trust and rapport. When you’re comfortable with your photographer, relaxing and enjoying the process is easier.

Before booking, take the time to chat with your photographer. Ask questions about their style and approach to ensure they’re a good fit for you.

A good photographer knows how to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, helping even the shyest individuals feel at ease.

2 – Dress to Impress – and Feel Comfortable

What you wear can have a huge impact on your confidence and mood. Choose outfits that make you feel good and reflect your personality. Avoid anything too tight or uncomfortable – it’s hard to focus on having fun if you’re constantly adjusting your clothes.

For brand shoots, make sure your wardrobe aligns with your brand identity. For family or couple sessions, coordinate outfits without being overly matchy. The key is to feel like the best version of yourself.

3 – Bring Props or Accessories

Adding props can bring a playful element to your photos. Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers, a quirky hat, or something meaningful like a musical instrument, props can help you feel more comfortable and spark creativity during the shoot.

For brand shoots, think of props that highlight your profession or services. For example, a baker might bring fresh pastries, or a florist could use a bouquet as part of the setting.

4 – Play Music to Set the Mood

Music is a fantastic way to break the ice and lift the energy of a photoshoot. Bring a portable speaker to play your favourite upbeat tunes.

Whether you’re vibing along to pop hits or relaxing to mellow acoustic tracks, music can help you loosen up and feel more at ease.

5 – Don’t Be Afraid to Be Silly

Let go of the pressure to look “perfect” in every shot. Some of the best photos come from spontaneous moments of laughter or playfulness. Pull a funny face, jump in the air, or spin around – these candid moments often end up being the most cherished ones.

6 – Involve a Friend or Family Member

If you’re nervous, invite someone you trust to join the session. A friend, partner, or sibling can offer moral support and bring out your natural personality. Shared laughter and banter often lead to brilliant, unplanned photo opportunities.

7 – Embrace the Surroundings

For location shoots, make the most of the environment. Whether it’s a park, a city street, or a cosy indoor space, interact with your surroundings. Lean against a tree, sit on a bench, or twirl in an open field – these actions bring movement and life to your photos.

8 – Trust the Photographer’s Direction

A professional photographer knows how to guide you into flattering poses and capture the best angles. Trust their expertise, and don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. If a pose feels awkward, share your thoughts – collaboration always leads to better results.

Why Fun Leads to Better Photos

When you’re having fun, your authentic self shines through. Smiles are more genuine, body language is relaxed, and your eyes sparkle with life. These elements make for photos that are not only beautiful but also deeply personal.

A joyful atmosphere also builds confidence, which is crucial for anyone feeling camera-shy. When the experience feels less like a formal photoshoot and more like a fun outing, the final images will reflect that energy.

Ready to Have Fun During Your Next Photoshoot?

I believe photoshoots should be as enjoyable as the final images are beautiful.

Whether you’re looking for timeless portraits, vibrant event coverage, or creative brand photography, I’m here to make the process stress-free and fun from start to finish.

I would love to work with you to create photos that capture your true essence and tell your unique story. Get in touch today to book your session – and let’s make some magic together!
