It’s completely normal to feel nervous before a photoshoot.
Whether it’s your first time in front of the camera or you’ve done it before, the thought of being photographed can bring up all sorts of feelings.
You might worry about how you’ll look, how to pose or whether you’ll come across as confident.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a model or know how to pose.
With the right approach, you can feel calm, comfortable and even enjoy the experience.
As a photographer working with individuals, small businesses and charities across Cranleigh and the Surrey Hills, I’ve seen all sorts of people arrive for their shoot. Some are full of energy, others are a bit tense.
Almost everyone feels better once we get going, but the more relaxed you are at the start, the more natural and authentic your photos will be.
So how do you get into that relaxed frame of mind? Here are some ways to help calm your nerves before your next photoshoot.
Give yourself enough time
One of the easiest ways to add stress to your shoot is to run late.
If you’re rushing to get ready or stuck in traffic, you’ll arrive feeling flustered. Try to keep your schedule clear beforehand so you’re not squeezed for time.
Set out your clothes the night before and allow yourself plenty of time to get ready. Leave early if you’re travelling to a location, so you don’t have to worry about parking or finding the place.
When you arrive in a calm state, it sets the tone for the whole shoot. You’ll have a chance to settle in, chat and ease into the session without any pressure.
Wear something that feels like you
Outfits can make a big difference to how you feel. Choose clothes that you feel good in, that fit well and suit your style.
You don’t need to dress up in something that doesn’t feel like “you” just because it’s a photoshoot. When you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it shows. You’ll feel more at ease, and your confidence will come through in the photos.
If you’re not sure what to wear, think about the message you want your photos to give. Smart casual usually works well, but it depends on your personality and the purpose of the shoot.
You’re always welcome to bring a few options so we can decide together what works best on the day.
Get to know your photographer
Feeling relaxed starts with trust. The more comfortable you are with the person behind the camera, the easier it is to be yourself. That’s why I always make time to chat before the session, whether it’s a quick call or email exchange. If we’ve spoken beforehand, you’ll already feel like you know me a little when we meet.
You don’t need to be best friends, but a bit of friendly conversation at the start of the shoot can make a big difference. We’ll take a few test shots, have a chat, and soon it won’t feel like a formal shoot at all – just a relaxed session with someone who wants to help you look your best.
Breathe and move
One of the simplest ways to ease nerves is to take a few deep breaths. Breathing deeply helps slow your heart rate and calm your mind. Before the shoot starts, try breathing in slowly through your nose for a count of four, holding for four, then breathing out through your mouth for four. Do this a few times to centre yourself.
It also helps to keep moving. You don’t have to strike dramatic poses or stay stiff.
If you’re standing, shift your weight slightly from one foot to the other, or gently move your arms. If you’re sitting, try leaning forward slightly or turning your shoulders.
Movement makes photos feel more natural, and it gives your body something to do, which can ease that awkward “what do I do with my hands?” feeling.
Focus on the purpose
It can be easy to get caught up in how you look or whether you’re doing things “right.” Instead, think about why you’re having the photos taken.
Maybe it’s to promote your business, update your LinkedIn profile or celebrate a personal milestone. When you focus on the bigger picture, it helps shift the attention away from any insecurities and towards what you’re aiming to achieve.
Remember, your photos are for you. They’re meant to reflect who you are and what matters to you. You don’t have to be perfect – just real.
Trust the process
It’s natural to want everything to go perfectly, but try not to overthink it.
The best photos often come from the unplanned moments – a laugh, a glance, a natural expression. That’s why I guide the shoot in a relaxed, informal way, giving just enough direction to help you feel comfortable without making things stiff or staged.
Most people are surprised by how much they enjoy the process once we get going. If something feels awkward at first, that’s okay. We take our time, and there’s never any pressure.
A relaxed shoot leads to relaxed photos
The more at ease you are, the more natural your photos will look. It’s not about forcing a smile or striking a pose. It’s about being yourself, and letting that shine through.
Whether you’re having a personal branding session, an event portrait or some professional headshots, feeling relaxed is the key to photos you’ll actually want to share.
If you’ve got a shoot coming up and you’re feeling a bit nervous, don’t worry. With a bit of preparation and the right support, you’ll be just fine.
