Picture Perfect: 15 Tips for Perfect Business Portraits

19/02/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

In this increasingly competitive world, a professional photograph is worth more than a thousand words – it’s your first handshake, your opening elevator pitch, and your lasting first impression all rolled into one.

For small businesses and solopreneurs, quality portrait photography is the cornerstone of personal branding, capturing who you are, what you stand for, and why your clients should choose you over and above the competition.

In this blog post, 15 essential tips to ensure your headshot captures your professional image and sets you apart from the crowd.

1 – Start with brand identity

Before the photographer clicks their shutter button, think carefully about your brand. What are your values, mission, and the image you want to project? Clarity around the brand will drive the style of your portrait, the choice of backdrop, and even the outfit you wear.

2 – Choose the right photographer

Your chosen photographer is your partner in this venture. Select someone experienced in photography (!) and a deep understanding of corporate identity and marketing. Did I mention that I spent 20 years in financial services marketing before becoming a professional photographer?

3 – Dress the part

Opt for professional attire that reflects your role and industry. Solid colours usually come across best, as busy patterns can distract from the most essential part of the photograph – you!

4 – Simplify the background

My favourite backdrop choices for business portraits are uncluttered, ensuring you are the photo’s focal point. I’ve got a range of these backdrops in my studio. If you prefer an ‘environmental’ portrait, my shooting with a shallow depth of field, I can remove any distracting elements.

5 – Embrace natural light

There’s no escaping the fact that natural light is flattering. When I shoot with strobes (artificial light) in my studio, which offers more control over lighting and shadow than natural light, I use large softboxes and curved reflectors to replicate this.

If we’re shooting together outdoors, an early morning or late afternoon/early evening often produces the best lighting.

6 – Pose naturally

Standing in front of a camera can be AWKWARD. I love working with my subjects to find comfortable, natural poses that project confidence without stiffness. Having some music playing in the studio often helps, too.

7 – Be authentically you

Even in a corporate setting, portrait photography should always allow your true self to shine through. Authentic expressions beat forced smiles, leading to a connecting and engaging portrait.

8 – Consistency is key

When capturing multiple team members, a unified look in lighting, backdrop, and style helps present a cohesive brand image.

9 – Keep it current

Update your headshots as your brand grows and evolves, keeping your professional image fresh. Your portrait should reflect how you look today, not a throwback to your look five years ago.

10 – Preparation matters

Discuss your brand and objectives with your photographer before the shoot. Going into a shoot well-prepared means you stand the best chance of achieving your vision.

11 – Consider professional styling

If you want to take your business portraits to the next level, there’s a significant benefit to bringing in a professional hair and make-up artist. I’ve worked with talented individuals who keep the look polished yet authentic.

12 – Props tell stories

When relevant, use props to narrate your brand story. Ensure any props introduced to a portrait complement, and don’t distract.

13 – Selection collaboration

Post-shoot, collaborate with your photographer to choose the images that best represent you and your brand. Trust your photographer to select the best photos from the session; they know what makes a great photo.

14 – Invest in retouching

Work with a photographer who spends time on each photo to remove blemishes and present the best possible version of you. Aim for enhancement through editing, not radical transformation.

15 – Use your portraits

With these powerful visual assets in place, make sure you use them! Deploy your new headshots across all platforms for a consistent and impactful brand presence.
