Planning a Branding Shoot? The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for a Successful Session

23/04/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

A professional branding photoshoot can significantly enhance your business’s image, boost your credibility, and help you build stronger connections with your ideal audience.

But knowing how to prepare can feel overwhelming if you’ve never organised one before. Where should you start? What should you bring? How can you ensure you get the most out of your investment?

As a professional photographer specialising in branding, portraits, and events across Cranleigh and the Surrey Hills, I’ve guided many entrepreneurs and small businesses through successful branding sessions.

Based on that experience, I’ve created this ultimate guide to help you confidently prepare and make your branding shoot a smooth, productive, and enjoyable experience.

Follow these practical steps for a successful, stress-free branding session that delivers fantastic results.

Step 1: Define Your Goals and Purpose

Before anything else, clearly define what you hope to achieve from your branding shoot. Are you launching a new website, enhancing your social media presence, updating your professional headshots, or all of the above?

Make a clear list of your objectives, such as:

-Professional, approachable portraits for your website.

-Authentic behind-the-scenes shots for social media.

-Lifestyle or product imagery highlighting your services or products.

-Consistent visuals for your brand identity and marketing materials.

Sharing these goals clearly with your photographer helps them tailor the shoot to your needs.

Step 2: Create a Shot List

A detailed shot list ensures nothing important is missed. Your photographer will guide you, but it helps enormously if you have an idea of essential images you require.

Include details like:

-Specific portrait styles (headshots, candid portraits, action shots).

-Images capturing your workspace, products, or services in action.

-Team photos (if applicable).

-Lifestyle or location-specific shots that reflect your brand’s personality.

A well-organised shot list means every minute of your shoot is used effectively, maximising your investment.

Step 3: Select the Perfect Location

Choosing a location that aligns with your brand personality is key to creating authentic images. Consider:

-Your own workspace (ideal for authenticity).

-Outdoor settings like Knowle Park, Winterfold Forest, or other scenic locations around the Surrey Hills, if these align with your brand.

-Stylish cafés or venues in Cranleigh, perfect for lifestyle images or relaxed, professional portraits.

Discuss your ideas with your photographer—they can recommend great local spots that reflect your brand identity perfectly.

Step 4: Plan Your Wardrobe

Choosing outfits is often a stress point, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Stick to your brand colours and style to maintain consistency and ensure your images complement your existing branding.

Some practical tips:

-Select outfits that reflect your brand’s style—casual, professional, creative, or refined.

-Avoid overly trendy or patterned clothes. Neutral or muted colours work well, as do layers for variety.

-Bring multiple outfit choices to vary your look.

-Ensure clothing is freshly pressed, clean, and comfortable, so you feel confident and relaxed.

Step 5: Think About Props and Accessories

Props and accessories help add depth, character, and visual interest to your branding photos, highlighting your personality and the way you work.

Ideas might include:

-Tools of your trade (laptop, notebook, camera, design materials).

-Items that reflect your interests or personality (coffee cup, books, plants).

-Branded items such as business cards, stationery, or products.

These subtle additions enhance your images’ storytelling power, making them more engaging and relatable.

Step 6: Hair, Grooming, and Makeup

It’s worth considering professional grooming or makeup if it helps you feel confident. If you’re doing your own grooming:

-Keep hairstyles simple and familiar—this is not the time for drastic experiments!

-Aim for a natural makeup look that enhances your features without overshadowing your personality.

-Men should consider neat facial grooming and trimming before the shoot.

Feeling confident about your appearance translates into relaxed, genuine portraits.

Step 7: Prepare Yourself Mentally

Feeling camera shy is common, but preparation reduces anxiety. Practice simple poses in the mirror or take casual selfies to familiarise yourself with how you look best.

Communicate any anxieties clearly to your photographer beforehand—they’re there to reassure and guide you.

Taking a few deep breaths, focusing on your goals, and reminding yourself why you’re investing in this photoshoot will greatly reduce nerves and help you enjoy the experience.

Step 8: Communicate With Your Photographer

A strong collaboration with your photographer is key. Share your vision, goals, anxieties, or ideas openly.

Professional photographers appreciate clear communication and will do everything possible to ensure your branding shoot runs smoothly.

A pre-shoot meeting or phone call is always beneficial, providing reassurance, direction, and ensuring expectations align perfectly.

Step 9: Final Preparation and Checklist

In the days leading up to your shoot, run through a final checklist:

-Confirm time, location, and schedule with your photographer.

-Pack all outfits, props, accessories, and grooming supplies the day before.

-Plan travel time, allowing extra minutes to avoid rushing.

-Get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, and eat something light before the shoot to ensure you feel your best.

Arriving calm and prepared makes your branding shoot feel effortless and enjoyable.

In Summary: Your Branding Shoot Preparation Guide

Quickly summarising your key preparation steps:

-Clearly define your goals and objectives.

-Create a detailed shot list.

-Choose a location that suits your brand.

-Select appropriate outfits aligned with your style.

-Gather props and accessories that tell your brand story.

-Consider professional grooming or makeup.

-Prepare yourself mentally and practise simple posing.

-Communicate openly with your photographer.

-Follow your final checklist to ensure stress-free preparation.

  • I’d stumbled across Martin somehow on instagram, I was immediately struck by some of his portraits of a female actor. I loved the way he had used the light in her portraits which created mood and drama.

Martin is an exceptional photographer and a really lovely person. He puts you immediately at ease and his calm nature and positive outlook immediately help you to relax in front of the camera. He had really listened to the brief I had given and provided advice on compositions to capture the look I really wanted.

The images have come out even better than I would have imagined and you can really observe how relaxed he made me feel in every shot. The photography is both a keepsake and something I can share to promote my business, I can’t thank him enough.
