Portrait Perfection: Easy Ways to Relax and Look Natural in Front of the Camera

17/01/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

We’ve all been there—you step in front of the camera, and suddenly your body feels awkward, your smile feels forced, and you’re not sure what to do with your hands.

The good news? You’re not alone! Even the most photogenic people have moments of stiffness in front of the lens.

The better news? There are simple ways to relax and look natural in your photos.

As a professional photographer, I’ve seen it all, and I know how to help my clients feel comfortable and confident during a shoot.

Here are some easy, practical tips to help you look your best in your portraits—no awkwardness required!

1 – Trust Your Photographer and Be Yourself

The first step to great portraits? Trusting your photographer.

A good photographer will guide you through the session, suggest flattering angles, and offer small adjustments to make sure you look amazing. They’re not just there to snap a few photos—they’re there to make you feel at ease and capture your authentic self.

Before your session, share a bit about yourself and what you want from your photos. Do you prefer posed shots or natural candids? Do you want a soft, approachable look or something bold and confident?

The more your photographer knows, the better they can tailor the session to suit you.

Tip: Remember that you don’t need to “perform.” Your best photos happen when you’re simply being yourself—laughing, chatting, and moving naturally.

2 – Breathe, Move, and Take Your Time

When you’re in front of the camera, nerves can cause you to tense up without realising it. A simple way to stay relaxed is to focus on your breathing. Take slow, deep breaths between shots.

Movement is another game-changer. Static poses can feel awkward, so don’t be afraid to shift your weight, take a small step, or adjust your hands. Subtle movements create more natural-looking portraits and give your photos a dynamic, effortless feel.

Example: Instead of standing completely still for a headshot, shift your shoulders slightly or turn your head as if you’ve just been called by a friend. These tiny changes can create a more natural, spontaneous look.

3 – Wear Something That Feels Like You

Feeling good in your outfit makes a world of difference. When you’re wearing clothes you’re comfortable in, you’ll naturally feel more confident in front of the camera.

Choose something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself—whether that’s a tailored blazer, a floaty dress, or your go-to casual look.

Avoid anything that’s too tight, too loose, or that you’ll constantly need to adjust during the session. Also, make sure your clothes complement the setting and mood of the shoot.

Tip: If you’re unsure, bring a couple of options! Your photographer can help you choose what works best on the day.

4 – Forget the Camera and Focus on the Moment

One of the easiest ways to relax during a photoshoot is to pretend the camera isn’t there. Instead of thinking about how you look, focus on enjoying the moment.

Your photographer will often chat with you, ask you questions, or even tell you a few jokes to help you loosen up. Go with it! These candid moments often produce the best, most genuine smiles and expressions.

Example: During a brand session, I often ask clients to describe what they love most about their work or share a funny story. These little interactions bring out authentic emotions—whether it’s a bright smile, a thoughtful expression, or a confident pose.

5 – Master the Natural Smile

A forced smile can make you feel (and look) uncomfortable. The trick to a natural smile is to let it build gradually. Think of something that genuinely makes you happy—a favourite memory, a funny inside joke, or even your next holiday plans.

If full smiles feel too much, a soft smile can be just as impactful. Relax your face and let a slight smile touch your eyes and lips. This subtle approach can create an effortlessly calm and approachable vibe.

Tip: If smiling on command feels awkward, take a few breaths and close your eyes for a second. When you open them, imagine you’ve just spotted an old friend—then let your smile form naturally.

6 – Let Go of Perfection

This one’s important: don’t aim for “perfect.” Portraits aren’t about looking flawless—they’re about looking real. Some of the best portraits happen in between the “perfect” shots—when you’re laughing, adjusting your hair, or having a quiet moment of reflection.

If something feels awkward or stiff, don’t be afraid to tell your photographer. They’re there to guide you, offer adjustments, and make sure you’re feeling good throughout the session.

Example: I’ve had clients who felt self-conscious about their expressions or angles. By taking a few relaxed shots in between poses, they realised the candid moments captured who they truly were far better than any “perfect” pose.

Ready to Feel Confident in Front of the Camera?

A great portrait session isn’t about forcing a look or striking a pose—it’s about creating a comfortable space where you can be yourself.

Whether you’re prepping for professional headshots, personal branding photos, or family portraits, remember these tips: breathe, move, smile, and most importantly, enjoy the process.

If you’re ready to book your portrait session and want someone who will make you feel at ease every step of the way, I’d love to help. Let’s capture you at your best—natural, relaxed, and undeniably you.

  • Just wanted to say thank you so much for kindly having me in to take headshots. You made me feel extremely comfortable and it was a very fast process. I was in and out within 20 minutes and you had my headshots edited and sent over to me the same day. I’d certainly recommend you to all my family and friends and once again thank you so much.
