Why It Takes a Village to Create Exceptional Photography

15/04/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Two planes slicing through a solar eclipse with wings just feet apart were captured during a four-minute window. The resulting photographs are as incredible as they sound, and this recent Red Bull project is a potent reminder of a powerful truth in photography: the best shots are born from collaboration.

Red Bull is known for its exceptionally ambitious projects, all designed to showcase their brand. In this case, an awe-inspiring shoot needed a unique blend of skills and extensive teamwork.

Photographers Peter McKinnon, Dustin Snipes and Mason Mashton joined forces with pilots Kevin Coleman and Pete McLeod, who precisely manoeuvred their aircraft through the temporarily darkened skies, perfectly aligning with the solar eclipse.

Every detail, from the reflective wrap on the wings to the precise communication from ground to sky, was meticulously planned and executed.

Here are three to five key takeaways that underline the essence of teamwork in photography, based on this project and my own professional experiences:

Preparation is Key: The team spent months planning the Red Bull shoot, ensuring that every second of the eclipse was maximised. Preparation is crucial in any photography project. Knowing your subject, the environment, and the necessary equipment beforehand can make the difference between a good shot and a great one.

Clear Communication: During the eclipse project, on-ground team member Luke Aikins translated the photographers’ vision into instructions for the pilots. Clear communication between a photographer and their subject or client is essential. Understanding their needs and expressing your creative vision ensures everyone is aligned, often leading to exceptional results.

Adaptability: Even with perfect planning, the ability to adapt is vital. The photographers and pilots only had three passes to get the perfect shot during the eclipse, requiring them to adjust quickly to unforeseen challenges. In everyday photography, conditions can change rapidly, and being able to shift gears is an invaluable skill.

Testing and Feedback: Before the final moment of the eclipse, the team conducted numerous test flights. I employ this practice of trial and error in my sessions. It allows us to refine our approach and adjust based on what works best in real time.

Celebrate Every Role: From the pilots to the photographers and ground crew, every role in the Red Bull project was vital. Recognising and valuing each contribution encourages a supportive atmosphere that often leads to innovation and excellence.

I love it when photography projects like this make the headlines. Most photographs don’t require planning and collaboration of this scale, but when they do arise, the collective effort of all involved helps to elevate the art of photography.

Next time you book a photo session, remember you’re part of a creative team.

I would love to collaborate with you and your brand to transform your ideas into something exceptional.

  • I had a brilliant time with Martin today (having my photo taken does not come easily to me!) and although I was extremely nervous, he instantly put me at ease and made the shoot fun and I’m so impressed with the outcome.
