When you hire me as a photographer, you invest in more than my access to a high-end camera kit.
While owning (and understanding how to use!) top-tier equipment, like the latest professional camera bodies and precision-crafted lenses, plays an essential role in creating stunning images, far more value lies in the skill, creativity, and connection the photographer brings to each shoot.
My background as a photographer is unique; I had a mid-life change from a successful career as a Chartered Financial Planner to becoming a full-time photographer. As part of that journey, I learnt that building trust, attention to detail, and understanding clients’ needs are as critical in photography as in financial planning.
In this blog post, I take a closer look at how these skills and experience make a meaningful difference to your photos – and the overall photography experience.
1 – An Eye for Detail and Creativity
Photography requires a blend of art and technical ability. Sure, you can point a camera at anything and press the shutter button. Still, without a creative vision and eye for detail, the resulting photo is unlikely to be particularly interesting.
Photographers should be able to craft images, paying close attention to every element, from lighting and composition to stray hairs and distracting background elements.
This process is enhanced by my recent investment in the latest professional-grade camera bodies and lenses, which are important tools that allow me to capture details with exceptional clarity and precision.
But great tools alone don’t create the best outcomes. Without years of experience and dedicated practice, I would be likely to miss the details and opportunities my eyes have become trained to see, even with the best possible kit at my disposal.
For example, when shooting portraits, I always look for that perfect blend of light, background, and emotions that tell the right story in a single frame.
2 – The Art of Connection
Great photography is as much about connection as it is about cameras.
Being in front of the lens can feel intimidating for many people, especially those who are camera-shy or uncertain about how to pose (what do I do with my hands?!).
This is where my background as a Chartered Financial Planner has been particularly valuable. In that role, I got a lot of practice (!) building trust quickly, understanding client concerns, and putting people at ease.
It turns out these are all skills that seamlessly translate into my work as a portrait photographer!
During every shoot, I can create a relaxed and supportive environment where my clients can feel confident and be themselves. When clients trust me during a shoot, their natural expressions and personalities shine through. And that’s when the magic happens.
3 – Technical Expertise Backed by the Best Equipment
Behind every stunning photo is a combination of technical expertise, artistry, and state-of-the-art equipment.
I’ve recently spent a small fortune on the latest professional-grade cameras from Nikon and accompanying lenses, which I chose for their exceptional image quality and ability to perform well in the various scenarios I typically shoot.
With the right kit and knowledge of using it, I can balance harsh sunlight during an outdoor shoot or capture the rich, subtle tones visible in a low-light setting.
I have the tools and the know-how to adapt quickly to changing environments, adjusting on the fly.
Post-production is equally critical. I can enhance your images while preserving their natural look during the editing and retouching stage.
My approach to editing ensures that every photo is high-quality, with any minor blemishes or imperfections removed.
4 – Problem-Solving Skills and Adaptability
Working as a Financial Planner and then as a photographer, I’ve discovered that no two scenarios are ever exactly the same.
Flexibility and quick thinking are essential when unexpected challenges arise. And they do arise!
For example, I once arrived at a photography location only to discover it had been closed unexpectedly due to a burst water main. Thanks to my ability to adapt and a healthy amount of local knowledge, I quickly found an alternative venue nearby that worked for the client and lined up with their vision for the shoot.
Problem-solving like this is second nature to me; when there’s a bump in the road, I’m happy to adapt and overcome quickly to ensure everything runs smoothly.
5 – A Client-Focused Approach Inspired by My Financial Planning Background
My time as a Chartered Financial Planner taught me the importance of truly understanding my client’s needs and aspirations. In that world, we call it ‘know your customer’, and it’s an essential regulatory requirement and necessary to provide the best possible advice.
In photography, I take the same approach.
Your photo shoot is a collaboration. I listen carefully to understand your goals and preferences, allowing me to create images that reflect your personality and vision.
At the same time, I bring my expertise and experience to refine your ideas or suggest creative alternatives to elevate your initial concept.
With every photography session, it’s my goal to create photos that are beautiful and meaningful. I want your photos to reflect who you are.
Why These Skills Matter
Hiring a photographer means you’re not just paying something to take pictures. You’re relying on that photographer to ‘get’ what you want from the shoot, tell your story, and capture the essence of who you are so they can deliver images you will cherish forever.
From technical mastery of lighting and cameras to a healthy dose of emotional intelligence, these qualities set a professional apart.
Everything I bring to the table, from investing in the right tools for the job to training to understand people on a deeper level, allows me to deliver photos as part of an experience you’ll enjoy and remember.
