Why Choosing the Right Photographer Matters: A Reflection on Style

09/12/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

During a recent portrait session, a client shared something that stuck with me.

As we wrapped up, she admitted she had almost booked a different photographer with a completely different style. “I loved their photos,” she said, “but something felt off—I wasn’t sure it would suit me.”

Ultimately, she chose me because my portfolio aligned with their vision: authentic, professional portraits that felt both personal and real.

That decision made all the difference.

As a photographer, I’ve seen this scenario play out countless times. People often focus on logistics like availability, price, and location but overlook one of the most crucial factors in choosing a photographer: their style.

What Is a Photographer’s Style?

A photographer’s style is like a creative fingerprint—a unique way of seeing and capturing the world, shaped by their technical skills, artistic preferences, and personal experiences. It’s a blend of everything they are and everything they do.

My style revolves around portraying people at their best—natural, confident, and relatable.

I combine natural and artificial light with thoughtful composition to create polished but authentic images.

Whether photographing a business professional, a creative entrepreneur, or a family, I aim to highlight their personality and make them feel at ease in front of the camera.

But here’s the thing: no two photographers interpret the world the same way.

Some photographers specialise in dramatic, moody portraits with rich shadows and deep tones. Others create light, airy images that feel romantic and soft.

Some prefer stylised, editorial aesthetics, while others focus on candid, documentary-style photography. None of these styles are better or worse—they’re just different.

Why Style Matters When Choosing a Photographer

When you hire a photographer, you’re not just paying for photos but investing in their vision, skills, and creative approach.

Asking a photographer to mimic someone else’s style is like asking a chef to recreate a dish they’ve never tasted—it rarely works.

Here’s why aligning with a photographer’s style is so important:

1 – Consistency

A photographer’s portfolio highlights their strengths. You will likely love your final images if their style resonates with you.

On the other hand, hiring someone and expecting them to step outside their creative comfort zone often leads to disappointment for both sides.

2 – Trust and Confidence

When you choose a photographer whose style aligns with your vision, you can trust their process. That confidence allows you to relax and enjoy the experience, knowing they’ll deliver photos that reflect the work you admired in their portfolio.

3 – Authenticity

Photography should reflect who you are. Choosing a photographer whose style feels natural to you ensures your photos will look and feel authentic—not forced or out of place.

4 – The Creative Process

Every photographer has a workflow tailored to their style. Asking them to work outside that framework can disrupt their process and lead to less-than-ideal results.

How to Find the Right Photographer for You

Finding the perfect photographer may seem overwhelming, but these steps can make it easier:

1 – Explore Portfolios

Browse the work of different photographers. Look for patterns in their use of light, colour, composition, and editing. Do their photos evoke the emotions you’re seeking? Do they align with your vision?

2 – Be Honest About Your Preferences

If you love bright, airy images, seek photographers who specialise in that style. If you’re drawn to dramatic, moody portraits, look for someone whose portfolio reflects that aesthetic.

3 – Ask Questions

Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask about their approach. Most photographers are happy to discuss their style and whether it’s a good fit for your needs.

4 – Trust Your Instincts

Trust that feeling if you feel connected to a photographer’s work. Confidence in your photographer will lead to a better experience and stunning final images.

Why My Style Might Be Right for You

If you’re looking for images that balance professionalism and authenticity, my style might be just what you need.

I focus on creating polished yet personal photos—whether for headshots, branding, or events. My goal is to help you look and feel your best in every shot.
