Creating a Headshot Portfolio: When One Photo Isn’t Enough

19/02/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

A headshot is often the first impression you make—whether it’s on your LinkedIn profile, website, or a professional directory.

However, relying on just one image might not be enough to capture the full essence of your personal brand or meet the diverse needs of different platforms. That’s where a headshot portfolio comes in.

By curating a collection of diverse, high-quality images, you can showcase your personality, professionalism, and versatility.

Below are ten reasons why you should consider building a headshot portfolio, along with practical tips on how to make the most of it.

1 – Adapt to Different Audiences

Your audience may vary across different platforms and contexts, so it’s vital to speak their language without sacrificing professionalism.

A formal, polished headshot might be best for a corporate environment, whereas a more relaxed, approachable image could suit social media or creative industries.

By including at least one formal headshot and one casual or lifestyle portrait, you’ll be ready to connect with each audience effectively.

2 – Stay Relevant Across Platforms

Every platform has its own visual requirements, and a one-size-fits-all image may not deliver the best results.

A 4:5 crop might work perfectly on Instagram, for instance, but a horizontal shot could be better for a website banner or LinkedIn profile.

Work with your photographer to create images in multiple orientations and compositions so your headshots always look polished, regardless of where they appear.

3 – Showcase Different Aspects of Your Personality

One single photo can’t fully represent who you are. By building a headshot portfolio that highlights different facets of your personality—whether it’s warmth, confidence, creativity, or authority—you’ll connect with a wider audience and make your brand more relatable.

Experiment with various facial expressions and poses to capture a range of moods and emotions.

4 – Capture Your Brand’s Essence

Consistency is crucial when building a personal brand. At the same time, you need variety to keep your visuals engaging.

A headshot portfolio should align with your brand’s colors, style, and tone, creating a unified, professional look that reinforces your identity.

Coordinate wardrobe choices, settings, and props to reflect your brand and maintain a cohesive feel across all images.

5 – Be Prepared for Opportunities

You never know when you’ll need a professional headshot—maybe for a conference, a publication, or a media feature. Having a ready-made portfolio allows you to respond quickly, saving time and showing that you’re well-organised.

Keep a high-resolution version of your images on hand so you can effortlessly provide the perfect headshot for any opportunity that comes your way.

6 – Highlight Your Expertise

If you wear multiple hats — speaker, entrepreneur, creative — a headshot portfolio can help you tailor your image to different roles.

By showcasing images that convey leadership, creativity, or approachability, you present yourself as versatile and well-rounded.

Consider including subtle props or backdrops, like a microphone for a speaker or a creative studio setting for an artist, to visually emphasise your professional focus.

7 – Keep Your Images Current

Your appearance and personal brand will evolve over time, and your headshots should keep pace.

A diverse portfolio makes it easier to update specific images rather than scheduling a brand-new shoot every time.

Aim to refresh your collection every two to three years—or sooner if there’s a significant change in your look or branding—to avoid confusion and maintain a professional edge.

8 – Enhance Your Marketing Materials

Your headshot portfolio shouldn’t be limited to LinkedIn. Use it for business cards, brochures, social media campaigns, or other promotional materials.

High-quality, varied images lend credibility and polish to your marketing efforts.

Include at least one shot with open space where you can overlay text or graphics—this will make the image more flexible for different marketing needs.

9 – Experiment with Locations and Backgrounds

A classic studio backdrop is timeless, but mixing in different settings—such as sleek office spaces, urban cityscapes, or natural environments—can add depth and interest to your portfolio.

Work with your photographer to select locations that complement your brand’s message. A mix of indoor and outdoor shots keeps your portfolio dynamic and helps you stand out.

10 – Stand Out from the Crowd

In today’s competitive market, a single, generic headshot might not leave a lasting impression. A thoughtfully curated portfolio, on the other hand, highlights your unique personality and level of professionalism.

Consider adding creative elements such as distinctive lighting, interesting poses, or relevant props to make your images memorable and eye-catching.

  • Todays shoot with Martin was an absolutely lovely way to spend an afternoon! From start to finish it was super fun and creative and we hopefully produced some really cool shots. Pre shoot comms were great and Martin sent some ideas of what he wanted to capture. During the shoot we bounced ideas around and tried other shots which was really good fun. Martin has already sent over the proofs a few hours later and already there are so many amazing images to choose from! I couldn’t recommend Martin highly enough.
