We are incredibly blessed to live, work and play in the Surrey Hills. As a photographer, I feel fortunate to have this natural playground on my doorstep, offering many stunning outdoor portrait locations.
From the established woodlands and hillside vistas of Winterfold Forest to the open meadows and beautiful lake at Knowle Park in Cranleigh, we’re spoilt for choice when finding a suitable backdrop.
Here’s how to make the most of these beautiful settings during your outdoor portrait session.
1 – Embrace the Changing Seasons
One of the greatest advantages of shooting in the Surrey Hills is how the landscape transforms with the seasons.
Last week, we visited Winkworth Arboretum near Godalming to see the emerging autumn colours. With so much woodland in the Surrey Hills, the autumn show is spectacular wherever you are!
Each season provides a different mood for your portraits, so consider what atmosphere you’d like to capture. Winter landscapes can be dramatic and moody, while summer fields offer a light and airy feel.
2 – Use Natural Features to Frame Your Shots
In locations like Winterfold Forest, the towering trees and dappled sunlight create a magical, almost cinematic effect. Positioning yourself among the trees or along a forest path can naturally frame the shot, drawing the viewer’s eye to the person in the portrait.
In Knowle Park, the large, open spaces with gently rolling hills are perfect for wider shots that capture the subject and the breathtaking scenery, adding a sense of place and tranquillity to the portrait.
3 – Play with Light and Shadows
Outdoor photography allows you to work with natural light, and Surrey Hills offers a variety of lighting conditions.
In the early morning or late afternoon, Winterfold Forest is bathed in soft, golden light, which adds warmth to the images and brings out rich colours in the landscape.
Knowle Park’s open fields and water features provide beautiful reflections and allow for long shadows, which can create a more dynamic, layered image.
4 – Choose Locations that Reflect Your Personality
The backdrop you choose for your outdoor portrait should reflect your personality or brand. For a more adventurous or rugged feel, woodlands offer that secluded woodland vibe with its network of trails and dense tree cover.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more peaceful and open setting, meadows, with views across the countryside, and calming water features, might be the ideal choice.
The key here is selecting a location that best fits your vision.
